VIN Assignment

When will my vehicle's VIN be assigned?

Your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is assigned by the manufacturer. The timing varies by manufacturer but is typically completed within 2-3 days. Ekho will update your buyer portal and notify you by email as soon as the VIN is assigned.

Why do I need my VIN?

Your VIN is required for several steps in the purchasing process, including your sale documents. Some sections of the buyer portal may be blocked until the VIN is assigned.

Why is my buyer portal blocked waiting for a VIN?

Certain steps require the VIN to proceed. Once the manufacturer assigns your VIN, Ekho will update your portal and you will receive an email notification to continue with the next steps. Unfortunately, Ekho cannot expedite VIN assignment as this is controlled by the manufacturer.

Where can I find my VIN?

Once assigned, your VIN will be displayed in your buyer portal. You can also find it in the order confirmation or VIN assignment email from Ekho. On the physical vehicle, the VIN is typically located on the frame or steering neck.

Vehicle Inspections

What is a VIN inspection?

A VIN inspection is a state-required verification where a licensed inspector physically confirms the VIN on your vehicle matches the number on your titling documents. This is required by many states to prevent fraud and ensure the vehicle matches the paperwork.

Does my state require a VIN inspection?

VIN inspection requirements vary by state. Common states that require VIN inspections include California (REG 31 form), Idaho, Utah, Nevada, and others. Ekho will notify you if a VIN inspection is required for your state and provide specific instructions.

How do I complete a VIN inspection?

The general process is:

  1. Wait until your vehicle has been delivered

  2. Take your vehicle (or the required forms) to a licensed VIN verifier — this can be a local DMV office, law enforcement agency, or licensed auto dealer

  3. The verifier will inspect the VIN on the vehicle and complete the required state form

  4. Send the completed form back to Ekho using the instructions provided

Ekho will provide you with the specific form and a guide to help your verifier complete it correctly.

What is the California REG 31 form?

The REG 31 is California's VIN Verification form. A licensed verifier must physically inspect your vehicle and confirm the VIN, engine number, and Federal Certification Label. For motorcycles and powersport vehicles, the Federal Certification Label is often located underneath the seat. Ekho will provide a guide you can share with your verifier to ensure the form is completed correctly.

Where is the Federal Certification Label on my vehicle?

For most motorcycles and powersport vehicles, the Federal Certification Label is a sticker located underneath the seat. Once the seat is removed (typically just a few screws), the label should be easily visible. The label will include language similar to: "This vehicle conforms to U.S. EPA Air emissions regulations…"

Who can perform a VIN inspection?

Depending on your state, VIN inspections can typically be performed by:

  • Your local DMV office

  • Law enforcement officers

  • Licensed auto dealers

  • State-authorized VIN verifiers

Ekho will provide state-specific guidance on who can complete the inspection for your particular situation.
